a) During the course of this class, I have learned many things about conducting a sound research study. I only knew the basics before this class, so I have learned such a great extent that there is too many things to name. One of the things that first comes to mind is the different types of research methods. I learned that a research study may be conducted using either a quantitative or qualitative study. I have also learned the how to analyze these types of study. In order to conduct a sound research study you must know how to review literature, collect data, analyze and observe, and report your findings. I learned how to use the data I have collected from the study, as well. I have learned and practiced how to code interviews, determine the response rate and margin of error, and how to report statistics. Lastly, I have learned how to format reports on the study using APA and/or MLA format. There is much more detail that goes into each of these things, but this is an overview of some of the most prominent things I learned.

b) These processes have taught me how to effectively communicate using methods and research. Even if I don't pursue a career in professional and technical writing, these processes will continue to provide me with important knowledge. Technical communication is all around us, so to be aware of certain skills will help me to communicate better. It will also help me with any future research. Overall, the processes I have learned have taught me that there are many way to effectively communicate. I now know how to conduct research and effectively present it, which is what a technical and professional communicator excels in.

It has been really interesting learning about the different research methods and how to dive into them further. I agree that learning how to use MLA and APA formats has been very helpful. This was the first class that I have had to use APA format in and it has been really interesting learning how to do that.
